The McClymonts’ Mollie McClymont is opting for a double mastectomy after discovering that she has a dangerous gene that carries a significant increase in the danger of being diagnosed with breast or ovarian cancer.
Taking to social media yesterday (7 March), she revealed that due to testing positive for the BRCA2 gene, which her sister Sam also has, she made the choice to have a double mastectomy “without hesitation.”
Last April, Sam McClymont shared that she had been diagnosed with the most aggressive type of breast cancer—triple negative breast cancer—and began treatment. In February, Sam confirmed that she’s currently cancer free.
Posting a photo of herself FaceTiming with her children, Mollie wrote on Instagram yesterday: “A few months ago, just like my sister Sam, I found out I carry the BRCA2 gene, giving me a 70% chance of developing breast or ovarian cancer.
“Without hesitation, I made the decision to have a double mastectomy, I didn’t want to walk the same path my sister has this past year. She truly is the most incredible human who has been through so much and has given me the most amazing gift to find out I had the gene before it went any further and I’ll be forever grateful.”
Mollie thanked her husband for staying by her side and her in-laws for taking care of their children as she deals with a significant health challenge.
“To my incredible husband who has been by my side every second, to my in-laws for having our kids while we are away and to my kids who I am missing like crazy, although FaceTiming them does make it easier… I’ll be home before you know it,” she wrote. “So here is to a happy and healthy future!”
Sam responded to her Instagram post, “Makes me so happy to know you could do this. So proud of you, such a huge decision. Here’s to a big beautiful life.”
Fellow country artists such as Fanny Lumsden, Adam Eckersley and Brooke McClymont, Brooke Schubert, Melanie Dyer, Tori Darke, Amber Lawrence, and others have shared their support for Mollie.
