Lainey Wilson Reflects On When Someone Spit At Her While She Was On Stage

Lainey Wilson has discussed a moment she’d likely rather forget but outlined just how important it is to not let surprising incidents from the road get to you in a new interview.

Speaking with Evan Paul on the Taste Of Country Nights On Demand podcast, Paul mentioned Wilson’s friend and fellow artist, HARDY, and the story behind his Quit!! album and tour—someone wrote the word “quit” on a napkin and put it in a tip jar during the singer’s early days.

Paul then quizzed Wilson on whether or not there was a moment that made her feel similar to how HARDY did, and she remembered when someone spit on her while she was performing on stage.

“Last year, when we were on our headlinin’ tour, somebody spit on me on stage,” Wilson admitted.

When Paul asked the Hang Tight Honey singer about what happened next, she laughed and shared, “I thought about gettin’ down there and findin’ whoever it was, but I didn’t.” Admirably, Wilson “kept rolling.”

Discussing the incident further, Wilson recalled thinking, “First of all, I was like, ‘Why in the world would you buy a ticket and then go spit on somebody?’”

Saying that “there’s some mean people in the world,” Wilson didn’t take the incident too seriously, adding: “They could have just been drunk and just being silly.”

Wilson’s attitude towards a potentially ugly incident is an example of her taking the high road and maintaining a sense of humour, even when something hurts.

In the recent past, Wilson has been subject to viral memes about her body and made headlines for wardrobe malfunctions. What could be used as a weapon to humiliate her is instead something she laughs off, with Wilson returning to asking herself, “What would Dolly do?”

In a recent cover story interview with The Music, Wilson said she’s often approached things in life with a sense of humour.

“When I think, like, what would Dolly Parton do if she split her pants on stage? I think she'd make a joke out of it. It won't be the last time I split my pants on stage, you know? At the end of the day, I thought, either I can make fun of myself or let other people make fun of me.”
